Background of the Study

Semantic memory organization refers to the way in which knowledge about words and their meanings is structured and retrieved in the brain. In the Igbo language, which is characterized by rich metaphorical expressions and polysemous words, understanding semantic memory organization is particularly challenging. Event-related potential (ERP) studies provide a powerful tool for investigating the temporal dynamics of semantic processing, as they capture neural responses to linguistic stimuli with millisecond precision (Ikechukwu, 2023). This investigation employs ERP techniques to examine how Igbo speakers organize and access semantic memory during word recognition tasks. By analyzing ERP components such as the N400, which is sensitive to semantic incongruence, the study aims to reveal the neural signatures of semantic processing in Igbo. The research will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of how semantic memory is structured in the Igbo language, with implications for both cognitive theory and language education (Chukwudi, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although ERP studies have advanced our understanding of semantic memory, there is limited research on semantic memory organization in the Igbo language. Conventional semantic models may not capture the unique linguistic features and cultural nuances of Igbo, leading to an incomplete picture of how semantic information is organized and accessed. This gap hinders the development of effective language teaching and cognitive interventions tailored to Igbo speakers. Addressing this issue is crucial for enhancing our understanding of semantic processing and for developing educational strategies that reflect the unique characteristics of Igbo language memory (Ikechukwu, 2023; Chukwudi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To investigate the neural correlates of semantic memory organization in Igbo using ERP.

2. To analyze ERP components associated with semantic processing in Igbo speakers.

3. To inform cognitive models and language instruction methodologies.

Research Questions:

1. What ERP components characterize semantic memory organization in Igbo?

2. How do Igbo speakers process semantically congruent versus incongruent words?

3. What are the implications for cognitive models of semantic memory?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it elucidates the neural dynamics of semantic memory in Igbo, offering insights into language processing that can inform educational and cognitive interventions. The findings will advance theoretical models and support culturally sensitive language teaching practices (Ikechukwu, 2023; Nwankwo, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to investigating semantic memory organization in Igbo using ERP measures among adult speakers, without extending to other neuroimaging modalities.

Definitions of Terms:

• Semantic Memory Organization: The structure and retrieval processes of meaning in the brain.

• ERP: Event-related potentials, which are measured brain responses to specific stimuli.

• Igbo Language: A language spoken predominantly in southeastern Nigeria with rich semantic complexity.
